God |
Regardless of your beliefs or where you are in your life's journey, if you
are a seeker of truth; if you care about right and wrong; if you believe
there is high vs. low quality; you must at least consider God. Regardless of
your conceptions about God, and whether or not you believe in God, you must
consider God. Even an athiest considers God in order to be an atheist. Human
Beings of all cultures and times have considered God because of the human
need to understand why we are here and how the universe works. Poor indeed
are those to whom these thoughts have not occurred. Not to wonder about the
meaning of life is hard to conceive of and almost all people
have done so in one way or another. Is the universe just a cosmic accident which, regardless of its mechanisms, came to be without design and meaning? Or is there intelligent design in the universe; a creator; that is, God. In one way of looking at it, the details of the nature of this creator are not even important.... just considering the existence of a creator, regardless of the creator's nature, is awesome beyond words! But wait... considering the lack of such a creator is JUST AS AWESOME!! Considering that this wonderful universe could just BE, having jumped out of some primordial cosmic egg in a big bang and developing into all we know is just as awesome as the existence of a creator. To believe either is to suspend understanding, for either choice boggles the mind. And yet, we must believe something, or we fail our most basic need in being human. We must believe something! People must decide for themselves what they believe. If they believe in God, they must decide the details of their beliefs and/or religion. If they do not believe in God, they must be comfortable with their explanations to themselves as to the meaning and origins of life. If the universe is an accident, it is difficult to understand where true right and wrong come from, and it is difficult to understand how there could be any true meaning in life if we are simply collections of atoms without souls, regardless of the complexity of the collection. Throughout our culture, we see that a large portion of the population no longer believes in absolute right and wrong. Moral relativism is the result of not really contemplating God, the source of truth. Many believe that we as humans are capable of deciding what is good and true without outside standards. This allows anything to be true depending on the personal and cultural bias being applied. The Founding Fathers of this country understood this. Thomas Jefferson understood this when he wrote the Declaration of Independence. We are endowed by the Creator with certain unalienable rights. These truths were perceived to be self evident by the Founders because they knew that there was no justification to claim their right to be free without an external source of that right. A Natural Right built into the order of the universe. This is deep philosophy and we risk losing all we are by thinking about it less and less in the modern world. All deep thinking about life and truth, meaning and understanding, eventually winds up being a question about God's existence. The nature of God is open to debate, but here we are simply considering the existence of God, regardless of God's nature. The answer seems clear, for even though it is almost impossible to believe in God at times, the alternative is even more impossible. Think about it. - WHS |
